Today I talk to you about Binge Eating Disorder, a type of eating disorder characterised by :

  • Recurring episodes of eating large amounts of food in a short period of time
  • Feeling of lack of control during binge eating
  • Great feeling of guilt and discomfort, with no subsequent compensatory behaviours (self-induced vomiting, major food restrictions, etc.).

Although it is less talked about, and bulimia or anorexia nervosa are better known, it is the most prevalent eating disorder, affecting between 1% and 3% of adults.

Although it tends to improve over time, for many people it can last for years, longer than we initially thought.

A new prospective study published in PsychiatricTimes, with a 5-year follow-up, reveals that 61% of people still experience this disorder after 2.5 years and 45% after 5 years of their initial diagnosis. These results show that the probability of relapse is much higher than previously suggested.

Today we have drugs that have proven to be useful in the treatment of these conditions, of course in conjunction with appropriate psychiatric and psychotherapeutic follow-up.

If you feel identified, ask for help because I can help you to overcome it.
